Novela Reader — Privacy policy
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Novela Reader ("Novela") is an e-book reader made by AlixPublishing. In short: your books and your reading stay on your computer. Novela collects no personal information and sends nothing to us.
What Novela keeps, and where
- Your books, in the Novela Library folder in your Documents.
- Your reading places, bookmarks, highlights, notes, shelves and settings, in Novela's own folder on your computer.
- Daily backups of that reading data, in your Documents.
All of it stays on your computer. We can't see it, and Novela doesn't upload it anywhere. If you uninstall Novela, Windows removes its own folder; your books and backups in Documents stay.
What Novela doesn't do
- No account is needed, and there's no sign-in.
- No advertising, no tracking, no analytics, no usage statistics.
- Your books, notes and reading habits are never sent to us or to anyone else.
Read aloud
Novela's own voices are made on your computer. The text of your books isn't sent anywhere to be read aloud. Windows' voices are provided by Windows itself.
The microphone
Novela uses the microphone only when you use voice commands (the microphone button or the V key) or switch on "Listen for 'Novela …'". It uses Windows' speech recognition, which works on your computer. Recordings aren't kept and aren't sent to us. If Windows' speech recognition isn't available on your computer, Novela may instead use the speech recognition built into Microsoft Edge (which Novela uses to show its pages); Microsoft's privacy statement covers that service. You can turn off microphone access at any time in Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
Registration and purchases
If you buy Novela Plus, the purchase is handled by the store you buy from (for example the Microsoft Store), under its own privacy policy. A Novela registration number contains the name and email address you bought it with; it's checked on your computer and isn't sent anywhere.
Links
Links to websites, such as SmartAlixPublishing, open in your web browser. Those websites have their own privacy policies.
Children
Novela doesn't knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If Novela ever adds something that sends information off your computer (for example syncing your reading between devices), it will be optional, explained in the app, and described here first, with a new date at the top.
