Privacy Policy

SmartAlixPublishing (smartalixpublishing.com) is a website where authors publish their books and readers buy and read them. It is run by AlixPublishing. This page explains what information we collect, why, who helps us handle it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

In short: we collect only what we need to run your account, publish books and sell them. We don't sell your information, we don't show advertising, and we don't use tracking or analytics services.

What we collect

When you create an account

Your name, email address and password. Your password is stored in scrambled (hashed) form; we can't read it.
Anything you add to your profile, such as a phone number, a short bio, a tagline or a photo.
When your account was created and when you last signed in. We also count failed sign-in attempts, so we can lock an account for a short time if someone is guessing its password.

If you're an author

Your author name or pen name, bio and photo, which are shown publicly with your books.
The manuscripts, covers and book details you submit, and our review notes. Published books are shown to everyone; unpublished ones are seen only by you and our review staff.
Your sales and royalties, and the details we need to pay you (and, where the law requires it, tax information).

When you buy books

What you bought, when, and for how much, so you can read your books and see your orders.
Payments are handled by our payment provider. Your card or bank details go straight to them under their own privacy policy; we never see or store your card number.

When you ask for an invitation

Your name, email address, whether you're an author or an agent, any message you write, and the internet (IP) address the request came from, to help us spot misuse.

When you contact us

Your email and what you tell us, so we can answer.

How we use it

To run your account and sign you in.
To review, publish and sell books, and to let you read the books you've bought.
To pay authors their royalties and keep the records the law requires.
To send you emails you need: confirming your email address, password resets, invitations, and messages about your books or orders. We don't send marketing emails unless you've asked for them.
To keep the site secure and stop misuse.

Who else handles it

We don't sell or rent your information. A few services help us run the site, and handle information only to do that work for us:

Railway: hosts the website.
Microsoft Azure: stores the site's database.
Resend: sends the site's emails.
Our payment provider: takes payments, as described above.
Some parts of the pages (icons and a few page components) load from cdn.jsdelivr.net, which sees your internet address when it sends them.

We may also share information when the law requires it, or to protect the site and its users from fraud or abuse.

Cookies and your browser

A sign-in cookie keeps you signed in, and a security cookie protects forms from being misused by other websites. Both are needed for the site to work.
Your browser also remembers a few of your choices on this computer, such as a message you've dismissed. These stay in your browser and aren't sent to us.
We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information while your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your personal information, except records we must keep by law, such as sales and royalty records needed for accounting and taxes. Invitation requests and their emails are deleted once they're no longer needed.

Your choices

You can see and change most of your details in your profile.
You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete your account, by emailing support@alixpublishing.com.

Security

The site uses encrypted connections (HTTPS), passwords are stored in scrambled form, and only the staff who need to can see account and book information. No website can promise perfect security, but we work to keep your information safe.

Children

SmartAlixPublishing is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Links to other websites

Links to other websites, such as the Brevard Authors Society or the Microsoft Store page for Novela Reader, are covered by those websites' own privacy policies. Novela Reader has its own privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
